IT- On November 30, at the Binh Dinh Department of Science and Technology, the Committee of Science and Technology for Consultation, Evaluation and Acceptance of the results of performing provincial-level Science & Technology tasks conducted the assessment and acceptance of the research topic "Researching and designing a liver model, determining the volume and detecting abnormalities of the liver area as indicated based on medical images of computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen” by Dr. Le Thi Kim Nga, lecturer at the Faculty of Information Technology.
Committee of Science and Technology approves provincial-level research topic
This is the first provincial-level scientific research project in Binh Dinh province to study the application of artificial intelligence in practice. The study collected 150 data sets of abdominal CT scans on the Internet, provided researchers by prestigious organizations. In addition, the research topic also collected and labeled 100 abdominal CT image data sets from hospitals for the research.
On the basis of collecting and labeling the data, the topic built a model to identify the liver region in abdominal CT images, detect abnormal areas in the liver and build a 3D liver model, determine the liver volume. These results support doctors in their diagnosis of a number of liver-related diseases and their design of appropriate treatment regimens.
The research topic was assessed by the Committee as achieving the set goals, the products of the project as good in terms of quantity and quality as stipulated in the signed contract. The Committee also recommended that Dr. Le Thi Kim Nga cooperate with the beneficiaries of the project in continuing to research the achieved results to develop the application of artificial intelligence to medical examination and treatment.
Dr. Le Thi Kim Nga, project leader reports on research results
To deal with the research topic, Dr. Le Thi Kim Nga and her team members from the Institute of Applied Science and Technology, Quy Nhon University and some doctors from Binh Dinh Provincial General Hospital spent a lot of time collecting data, researching the algorithms to build models to solve the problems posed. The research results of the project initially confirmed the professional capacity of Dr. Le Thi Kim Nga and her research team. The Faculty of Information Technology offered it congratulations to the research team and expressed the hope that Dr. Le Thi Kim Nga would continue to achieve more success in scientific research on artificial intelligence to better serve the work of teaching.
In the context of the strong development of the fourth industrial revolution, Binh Dinh province has been attracting sources of investment to develop Quy Nhon City, making it become a center for research and application of artificial intelligence. The research topic Researching and designing a liver model, determining the volume and detecting abnormalities of the liver area as indicated based on medical images of computed tomography (CT) of the abdomen” by Dr. Le Thi Kim Nga has made a significant contribution to the realization of Quy Nhon University's goal of training high-quality, application-oriented human resources.
